According to the United Nations site, "The Tropics account for 40% of the world's total surface area and are host to approximately 80% of the world's biodiversity." The idea of the day is to celebrate the fantastic diversity of life that exists among the tropical ecosystems, and raising awareness about the importance of conserving these incredibly valuable habitats that lie mostly between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
