Kitty colouring has links to gender, and what is coded into the genes they inherit from their parents. This is why tortoiseshell and calico kitties are almost exclusively females (those coat patterns require two X chromosomes to get both the red and black colours), and up to 80% of ginger tabbies are boys (because red is more common than black on the one X chromosome they have).
